TANK GIRL
This comic grew up in England and matured in the U.S. with a full length movie. The controversy now is whether or not Tank Girl has had her day. Many very loyal fans think she is here to stay.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Tank Girl first became a comic in Deadline Magazine, a U.K. publication that wanted to help expose talented new artists and their strips. It was 1988 when Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin showed their sassy, aggressive (an understatement) and skinhead female character to the world, if only with a very limited initial exposure. Why the appeal? Adam Ant probably said it best when he said the creators had created a comic equivalent to The Sex Pistols. Tank Girl is certainly not a comic for kids. It is full of foul language, outrageous behavior and basically a tremendous **** you attitude. Creators, Hewlett and Martin, felt that people would relate to the character because although we may not be angry all the time, we have all certainly felt that aggression part of the time and just could not express it. Tank Girl was always ahead of the trends trying out the hippy revival or the new age craze before the rest of us. The creators felt it was the anticipation of the readers that held them. What is she going to turn into next. She took advantage of her freedom for the best always. It was this and not aggression for aggression’s sake that kept the readers hooked. The future of Tank Girl is solid with her true fans like yourself.
