THE SILVER SURFER
In 1966, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the Silver Surfer in “Fantastic Four” #48. The Silver Surfer betrayed Galactus, so that Earth might be saved. But at what cost? His freedom. Galactus punished the Silver Surfer's betrayal by surrounding the earth with a barrier, which prevented only the Silver Surfer from leaving the planet.
Fans loved the Silver Surfer so much that in 1968, he received his own title, written by Stan Lee and John Buscema. This is how we learned the history of how the Silver Surfer came to be.
The Silver Surfer was from a planet far away called Zenn-La. Zenn-La, a society unaccustomed to violence, was invaded by the mighty Galactus. The young Norrin Radd offered to become a herald for Galactus' in exchange for Zenn-La’s immunity from Galactus’ wrath. Galactus agreed to this deal and transformed Zenn-Lavian into the Silver Surfer! The Silver Surfer left his beloved Shalla-Bal on earth and searched the universe for planets upon which Galactus could feed. Now, many years later, the Silver Surfer was exiled to Earth. Mephisto, one of the most evil characters seen in comics, was not long to appear and decide that he wanted the Silver Surfer's soul. From then on, Mephisto was the Silver Surfer’s nemesis. The Silver Surfer animated series, which premiered in February of 1998, saw an untimely end due to differences between Marvel Comics and Saban. Still, The Silver Surfer’s 13 episodes that aired from the series brought a whole new wave of fans to the Silver Surfer universe. |
