Godsmack is a U.S. rock band that’s central figure of Sully Erna. Erna is a self-confessed witch from Boston Massachusetts. He formed the band after taking a year long break from music. In 1995, the group was composed of: Robbie Merrill (bass), Tommy Stewart (drums), and Lee Richards (guitar). The last two group members mentioned only lasted three months before they were replaced by, Tony Rombolo and Joe Darko. They produced a self-titled album in 1996 on a small budget. The single from the album “Keep Away”, soon caught the attention of Paul Geary who signed them to PGE. After the band made a hit, their original drummer Stewart rejoined them once again.

After mild success, the band signed a new deal with Republic Records in July of 1998. The album was heavily remixed and became a hit, which was quite the surprise to many. It sold over a million copies in America alone. Godsmack furthered their popularity when they landed the opening act of Black Sabbath’s reunion tour.

Godsmack has been criticized by the media for their music sounding too much like Alice in Chains and Metallica. Naturally, the fans of Godsmack didn’t care too much about what the media had to say, and the band’s fame continued to grow. Their songs are featured on movie soundtracks, and their album Faceless, debuted at number one on the U.S. mainstream album chart in 2003.
