BATMAN
The television show that first aired in 1966 had an unsteady beginning. In the end, it became a tremendous success. It took North America by storm and caused Batmania. This show was unlike any other show on television. It appealed to kids for representing their comic book favourite but also to adults for its humor and famous star appearances.
An enormous amount of money was spent on this show’s production. The series aired for 3 action-packed series, the first two seasons on twice a week, then in 1968, it was cut back to once a week. ABC needed a boost in the ratings and they put their bets on Batman. After all, most adults in the 60's reminisced about reading comic books in their youth. It is still the same today.
Here was one of the great family shows coming to life. It was radicle for the time. Taking full advantage of the new possibility of colour effects, adding strange camera angles with the unforgettable,’BAM’, ‘ZLOP’ and ‘POP’, ABC felt they had a hit on their hands. The heavy advertising campaign informed us that ‘Batman is Coming!’. This guaranteed everyone knew about the show before it aired. The strategy worked making ‘Batman’ the number 10 show on Wednesday night and the number 5 on Thursdays.
The show attracted many stars in its web. Do you remember the episode with Jerry Lewis. Dick Clark, Sammy Davis Jr, or Edward G. Robinson? The list goes on. All this reminiscing leads me back to my comics and of course pulling on my new Batman t-shirt.
